IntroductionThe Little River Mechanics' Institute and Free Library was established in 1910 and the library opened to readers in 1911.
Objectives were to provide education, recreation and a focal point for community activities for those of and interested in the Little River Area. The term 'Free Library' in the nineteenth century enabled a new Library to receive a Governement grant. As a free library, Little River was required to allow the public to read newspapers at no charge. The Hall and Library Committee continues to conserve the historic fabric, fixtures and contents of their community-owned building. It looks to maximuse accessibility of the Hall, facilitate community activities and provide a secure environment for storage, veiwing and research through regular events, displays and open days for members, guests and visitors from inside and outside the region. The Committee encourages involvement of other local community groups. It provides space for the Little River Historical Society meetings, archives storage and fund raisers. Library events involve whole-school visits from the Little River Primary School opposite and regular 'magical' readings to the adjacent Play Group. |
